How to get Internet access in Belgium
Internet is widespread in Belgium: As of 2007 there were 5.22 million users. Telephone and mobile phone companies also offer Internet packages.
In Belgium, you can get bundled services that include Internet, mobile phone, land line and cable TV. There are different types of Internet access: ADSL, Internet on the move and Wi-Fi. Information on rates and different packages can be found at the providers' websites.
Land line phone companies that offer Internet are:
- Belgacom (download speeds between 2 Mbps and 20 Mbps)
- Telenet (download speeds between 4 Mbps and 100 Mbps)
- Numericable (available only in Brussels. Download speeds between 4 Mbps and 30/100 Mbps)
- VOO (available only in Wallonia and parts of Brussels. Download speeds between 2 Mbps and 15 Mbps)
- Billi (available in Brussels and Wallonia. Offers 10 WebTV channels)
- dommel (download speeds between 4 Mbps and 20 Mbps over the telephone network)
- cybernet (download speeds between 4 Mbps and 20 Mbps over the telephone network)
- EDPnet (download speeds between 4 Mbps and 24 Mbps over the telephone network)
- Base (download speeds between 1 Mbps and 12 Mbps over the telephone network)
Wireless service is offered by:
- Clearwire (available only in Brussels, with download speeds between 1 Mbps and 3 Mbps)
- Proximus (offers packages using the existing 3G mobile network)
- Telenet (uses the Mobistar 3G mobile network)
- Mobistar
You can apply for Internet access online or at the chosen provider's store, and you will need to present:
- your ID or passport
- proof of address (bill, property rental contract or bank statement)
- a bank account or International Bank Account Number (IBAN)
Free Wi-Fi is available in many public areas, such as airports, Internet cafés and bars.
