Buying property in the Netherlands

Introduction

Understanding the Dutch property market will make your search for the perfect home a lot easier.

The property market in the Netherlands has not been moving much recently and there are only small increases in price levels.

Due to a shortage in land, houses in the Netherlands are rather small compared to the rest of Europe. It’s not uncommon for a 3-story house to be occupied by 3 families, each having their own floor to live on. Also, the Dutch like leaving their curtains open so anyone can see inside. It’s a form of pride, to show their house.

The best way to find your dream house is to go to the Netherlands for some time and look for a property that matches all your qualifications. It’s best to do your research before you go to the Netherlands, look online, find classifieds, find addresses from estate agents and contact them beforehand. Then when you go to the Netherlands, you can rent an apartment for maybe 2 weeks and go see all the properties you had found on the internet.

The best advice is to take your time when looking around. Compare properties with each other and consider all the costs. Prices of some properties contain furniture, others don’t. Some properties might need serious renovation, other might not. The most important part of the buying process is to do your research!
