Getting a phone line

KPN (formerly known as PTT) is the largest telecommunications company in Holland. Until 1997, it had a monopoly on landline telecommunications in Holland. Most business and almost all private connections are provided by KPN.

Two other companies - Twinner and UPC - offer phone calls through their cable networks. This is quite new and not very common. To use these companies, you need to have or be able to get a cable connection (for television and/or internet). Other telecoms providers in Holland do exist, but they are mainly business-focussed, so we do not cover them here and instead focus on KPN.

Although it has always provided quality connections, KPN used to be known for bad customer service and high prices. Since privatisation, they have improved services and reduced prices.

Type of connection: Analog and ISDN

There are 2 types of connections available: Normal telephone lines and ISDN lines. A normal telephone line is the cheapest option and comes with one line and one number. You can use the line for telephone conversations or internet, but not simultaneously. Voice quality is high. Internet is slow, with a maximum of 56Kbps.

ISDN has higher monthy fees; however, you get 2 lines and 4 phone numbers. You can surf the web and make/receive phonecalls at the same time. ISDN used to be popular when broadband internet connections (such as ADSL or DSL) were not widely available. Now it tends mainly to be used by small companies.

Voicemail is an answering machine service for your telephone, call toll-free on 0842-333 to activate it. There is a charge when picking up messages. If you do not answer an incoming call within 20 seconds, the caller is redirected to your voicemail. You can record your own message to be used when answering calls.
